“Origin” is the second option available in the Advanced Search menu. “Origin” is a name we came up with for fairy-tale hypotexts—the main stories—behind films.

The traditional “Little Red Riding Hood” story has the number 333 in the Aarne Thompson Uther index (so ATU) of traditional folktale types.

So you can type Red Riding or Red Riding Hood or 333 into the Origin box and click Search. The list below brings up all Little Red Riding Hood (ATU 333) films currently in the IFTF, whether or not they actually have “Little Red Riding Hood” in their title. Hint: By default the films will be listed by Title. But you can use the Sort dropdown menu on the right side of the Advanced Search box to sort your search by Title (alphabetical); Year (oldest first); and Year (newest first) before Exporting.

If you want to download a list of the films you’ve found in your search, press Export. A spreadsheet will download to your computer, which you can then open with any spreadsheet application. The spreadsheet will include the Title, Release Year, Director, Country, Production Company and Link to the film in the IFTF.

When the film is included in the University of Winnipeg Library catalogue we have provided the link on the individual film page Links section. Thanks to Jack Zipes donating his fairy-tale film collection to us we have some 1000 fairy-tale film DVDs at the University of Winnipeg.

Unfortunately they are not available for circulation or InterLibrary Loan but they can be used in the library. You’ll need to bring a piece of photo id to get a special temporary user card. The link to the University of Winnipeg Library catalogue is also a link to World Cat, an international online library catalogue. You may be able to find a copy of the film at a library near you by using the Search Location option on that page.
